Healthy Living - A Positive Response to the Coronavirus
We're all thinking about the Coronavirus. It started out far away and now seems closer to home. Just the other day my son's university was closed early to limit the spread of the virus.
I think it's important that we strike the right balance with this health challenge. Let's not live in fear but let's be sensible. If we focus on healthy living instead of fear we can prepare ourselves without giving in to stress.
There are a few basics we can do to strengthen and protect ourselves. We can learn what these are and apply them. Some are precautions and some are good advice for healthier and happier living. Below are some guidelines gleaned from health sites and an article in the New York Times.
- Sanitise your hands. Try not to touch your face.
- Maintain a social distance where possible. Avoid being in enclosed groups.
- Improve your sleep for greater resilience. A sleep-deprived immune system isn't as effective at fighting off infection. A study compared people who regularly got less that 6 hours sleep with people who got 7 hours. When exposed to the common cold virus those who got less sleep were 4.2 times more likely to catch the cold!
- Reduce stress. Research shows that stressed bodies heal more slowly.
- Exercise. This reduces inflammation and supports infection-fighting cells. As an added bonus, endorphins from exercise reduce stress.
- Get some sunshine or a Vitamin D supplement (Vitamin D is protective against acute respiratory tract infections).
- Eat a balanced diet. Be sure to include fruit and vegetables!
- Use supplements to fill in the gaps in your nutrition but don't overdo it.
I live with an autoimmune disease of the thyroid called Hashimoto's so it's important that I bolster my body's health and immune system. I see this as an opportunity to take better care of myself and loved one's. I'm focusing on being a healthier and happier person and encouraging others to do the same.
So, don't let Coronavirus lead to stress and worry. Be sensible and realistic. Protect and strengthen yourself through lifestyle changes, better eating and supplements where necessary.
